昨日のジロ・デ・イタリア第１９ステージにおけるフルームの８０キロ逃げ、そしてその大勝利について、ランス・アームストロングが「THE MOVE」（彼が定期的に配信しているラジオ番組のようなもの）にて大いに語っていました。

この放送が興味深い内容だったので、いくつかポイントを書き起こして翻訳してみました。

I'm just gonna make one statement here right off the top and just... very clear... what we witnessed today from Chris Froome was probably one of the most monumental ride that we may ever see. I don't wanna make it too grandiose but you just... certainly the biggest ride we've seen in the last decade.

His race was over and I think in his own head he thought the race was over but I think what's interesting is before what we saw today - which again, epic, epic, epic ride... words cannot say enough for that... that type of effort - they knew that this was possible, they saw that Simon Yates (...) lost 20 seconds in less than 2 kilometer, 14 seconds a kilometer when you'd been riding that strong is that just every light goes off it says... "This guy is in trouble". My sources in Team Sky tell me that this wasn't random, this wasn't like "Oh my god, he's getting dropped" because... of course they can see that he's getting dropped. This was planned. This was... we're going to go to the front on the Finestre, the climb, that is a hard climb that eventually turned to gravel and dirt. And we're gonna set an extremely high tempo...

彼のレース（ジロ）は終わっていた。彼自身も頭の中ではそう思っていたんじゃないかと思う。今日のレース… もう一度言うが、本当に、本当に、物凄い（エピックな）ライドだった。あのパフォーマンスは言葉では言い表せない。で、興味深いのは今日のそのレースの前に、チームスカイはこのような展開が可能であるとわかっていたことだ。彼らはサイモン・イェーツが１キロで１４秒もタイムを落としたのを見た。あれだけ力強く走っていた選手にそのようなことが起きれば「この男になにかが起きている」と思うだろう。俺の持っているチームスカイ内の情報ソースによると、今日の展開は決して偶然ではなくて、「なんてこった、やつが落ちたぞ」とか、そういうんじゃなくて、彼らはイェーツが落ちていくことがわかっていた。つまり計画通りだったということだ。だから（チームスカイとしては）「フィネストレの登りで先頭に出る。あれはきつい登りでやがて砂利や土の道になる。そこで物凄く速いテンポをセットする…」と、そういうつもりだった。

Lance: That's because my phone was blowing up. It was insane amount of inbound data coming to my phone just because... this just isn't... look, I'm quite frankly I'm really surprised by this. I'm also really impressed that the Sky's director Nicolas Portal when (he was) asked just a few days ago... who they're looking to in week three and talked about what week three is like, it's not like week one or two, who they are worried about, who they are focused on, he didn't even mention Simon Yates. Here's the guy who's done whatever he wants to do on a bike race, he's completely dominate it, he has the pink jersey... and we all thought Chris Froome's race was over but the director said "No, he can survive the third week." and he was exactly right. So you've gotta give it to him for just... straight up calling it.

いや、俺の電話も鳴りっぱなしだったんだよ。ものすごい量のデータが電話に送られてきてさ。率直に言って、俺は今日のレースにとても驚かされた。そしてスカイのディレクターのニコラス・ポータルにもね。彼は数日前に「脅威に感じているのはどの選手か？」「どの選手にチームとしてフォーカスしているか？」と聞かれていたんだけど、その時に彼はサイモン・イェーツの名前すら挙げなかったんだ。あれだけ圧倒的な走りをして、ピンクジャージを着ていた彼をだ。そして俺たちはみんなクリス・フルームのジロは終わったと思っていたのに彼（ポータル）は「いや、彼は３周目を生き延びるよ」と言い、まさにその通りになった。

Here's the question. The question is... if its 80K to go on a race and the best rider in the world goes. Makes the move. Do you try to follow him? Or do you say "Okay, that seems to be a little early, this is crazy, no way he can..." all the things are easy to say in your head. "We can bring him back" "We can chase him down" "He can't sustain this"... but the reality... here's the reality. OK this is the truth and this is coming straight from within that team he could not follow. So he had no choice but people (...) say "He could've gone with him but he chose not to so therefore... tough luck"... it wasn't an option. On the heels of Sky's acceleration, the temp that they set on the climb and Froome going, making the move... he couldn't go.

ここで質問だ。レース残り８０キロの地点で、世界ナンバーワンのライダーが逃げた。君なら追うか？　それとも「仕掛けるのがちょっと速すぎる」「こんなのクレイジーだ」「成功するわけない」と自分に言い聞かせるか？　「捕まえられるはずだ」「最後までもつわけがない」と。だが真実は… 彼（デュムランのことと思われる）は追えなかったんだ。彼はああするしかなかった。しかし人々は「追うこともできたが、それを選択しなかった。彼にとってはそれが不運な選択となった」って言うんだ。そうじゃなくて、追うというのは彼の選択肢になかったんだ。スカイのあの加速、彼らが登りでセットしたあのテンポ… そしてフルームの逃げ… 彼は追えなかった。

It's been a crazy race and I wanna spend some time talking about Simon Yates who I think thus far has made this crazy race and made it very exciting. I warned... I didn't warn but we spoke about this on the last show I was worried that he was doing too much and he was too good. Not too good in a suspicious sense, just too good...

本当にクレイジーなジロだけど、サイモン・イェーツについても少し話したい。このクレイジーさを生み出し、これだけエキサイティングなものにしたのは彼だと思うからね。ただ前回の番組で俺は言ったよね。彼はやり過ぎている、できすぎてる感じがするから心配だって。別に”できすぎてる”ってのは、（ドーピングなどの）なにか疑わしいという意味で言ってるんじゃない。ただとにかく、彼はできすぎていた…

Tomorrow is not a flat stage and not a ride into Rome, sipping champagne. Tomorrow's a regit stage 214km, three big mountains, uphill finish. Chris Froome is great, he is the best rider in the world but what he did today... I'm just telling you, they're gonna be a defense mode tomorrow. And so you just... if I'm Tom Dumoulin I'd go to bed going "40 seconds, anything can happen"

What we witnessed is... you're not gonna see this for long time. I loved when we saw the interview and the guy says "Is this the most epic ride of your career?" I mean that goes under the dumbest question of the day. There's nothing in his career or anybody else's career of the last decade that compares it. It was so spectacular. Hats off to him, man.

今日俺たちが目撃したもの… こんなものは今後長い間お目にかかれないだろう。インタビュアーが「あなたのキャリアで最もエピックなライドでしたか？」って聞いてたけど、俺に言わせればあんな馬鹿な質問はない。フルームのキャリアにも、ここ１０年におけるほかのどの選手のキャリアにも、今日の走りに及ぶものなんて存在しない。まさに脱帽だよ。
